How to Squirrels Build Their Nest and Where Do They Build Them?
Most of us recognize how cute the squirrel can be. With their big bushy tail, red fur, and cute way they prance about, these are one of the most recognizable creatures on the planet. They are also quite unusual animals. While most rodents will eat just about anything, these critters are true herbivores, meaning they have a very select diet. Some will resort to eating meat in a pinch, but most will eat nothing more than plants and nuts.

The Oddity of Their Homes
The unusual eating habits of the squirrel is not there only peculiarity in comparison to other rodents. How they build their homes is also quite interesting. The nest of a squirrel not only gives it a safe place from the elements, but provides a high degree of protection. It is also a great place to store food in the winter and will protect them from potential predators. What separates squirrels from almost any other animal is the fact that they will build far more than just one nest. While they may have a primary location where they will live most of the year, squirrels ensure that they have several places to find food and shelter should a potential predator put them at risk or should they run out of food.

How the Nest Is Built?
Another interesting oddity about the squirrel is that the type of squirrel will also play a role in how the nest is built. For example, gray squirrels will build their nests in the forks of a tree. The nest itself is about the size of a football and is usually made of such things as dry leaves and twigs. These are usually found right around the tree, making it easy for them to be able to build their home. On the other hand, the red squirrel builds a far smaller nest than that of the gray squirrel. He or she will have several nests in close proximity to one another. This nest is also made of leaves and twigs, but could include grass as well. Once again, the materials used are those that are found within close proximity to the tree itself. Some squirrels build their holes in the ground. This is not common, but it does happen. The animal will usually enter through some type of crack or whole which becomes his primary entryway. The whole is usually hidden by grass and twigs, keeping predators from finding its location. In a pinch, it would not be surprising to see a squirrel has built their home inside the wall of your house or even in the attic area. They will try to find gaps or cracks in the siding or through the roof that enable them to be able to get in. Once inside your home, they use whatever is available to build their nest. Some can be extremely sophisticated. Keep in mind that a squirrel is looking for anyplace that will keep it safe and will protect its food. That could make your home or shed an ideal location.
